MARSHFIELD – Marshfield welcomed two tough opponents for its annual baseball tournament on Saturday and came away with a split.
The Tigers knocked off Holmen 8-7 before losing to Antigo 5-2, on Saturday at Jack Hackman Field, moving their record to 3-11 this season.
Marshfield trailed 4-0 and 7-4 before rallying to top Holmen (10-3), scoring four runs in the final three innings, including the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.
Ryan Krueger and Andy Goettl each had two hits, and Mason Coffren had two RBIs in the win for Marshfield.
Caleb Specht allowed one run in three innings of relief, and Austin Palacek grabbed the win after getting the final two outs in the top of the seventh.
“Nice pitching performances by Logan Caleb and Austin,” Marshfield coach Jon Bauer said. “Our defense turned in a great performance. Offensively we took advantage of every opportunity we had.”
Palacek started the game against Antigo, giving up just one run in four innings. The Red Robins (17-1) scored three runs in the fourth to pull ahead and held on from there.
Krueger picked up two more hits for the Tigers in the loss.
“Our pitchers did a nice job keeping us within striking distance,” Bauer said. “It was a good effort. We just needed a few more hits here and there. Austin did a good job finishing off the win in the first one and holding down the Antigo bats in this game until he ran out of pitches.”
Marshfield returns to Wisconsin Valley Conference action next week against Wausau East. The Tigers will play at home on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and at East at 5 p.m. Thursday.
