MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield baseball team found itself in a slugfest with Wausau East, then couldn’t get the Lumberjacks out in the fifth inning as East pulled away.

Marshfield scored four times in the fourth inning to cut East’s lead to 8-6 before the Lumberjacks exploded for 13 runs in the top of the fifth and went on to beat the Tigers 21-10 in five innings Tuesday at Jack Hackman Field.

It took four Marshfield pitchers to get out of the fifth inning as East was able to win its first Wisconsin Valley Conference game of the season and improves to 2-12 overall and 1-6 in the Valley. Marshfield is now 3-12 and 2-7 in the WVC.

“I give our guys credit for how they kept competing in this one,” Marshfield coach Jon Bauer said. “East really hit the ball. We threw just about every pitcher we had against them and we couldn’t quiet down their bats.”

Mason Coffren had three RBIs, Antonio Anaya added a pair of RBIs, and Brandon Montalvo and Ryan Krueger each had two hits and an RBI for the Tigers.

Cordell Myles had four hits and Forrest Kronberger had for RBIs for East.

The two teams will meet again Thursday at Wausau East.
