MARATHON – The Spencer and Stratford volleyball teams got a chance to play against a number of area schools that each could see later this season in the WIAA postseason, and both fared pretty well.
Spencer went 4-1 and finished in second place, losing to Marathon in the championship match 25-16, 12-25, 15-13.
Stratford ended up in fourth, falling to Fall Creek in third-place match.
Spencer beat Northland Lutheran 25-13, 25-10; Phillips 25-9, 25-20; Stratford 25-20, 25-21; and Fall Creek 25-27, 25-20, 15-10 to reach the champion match.
Courtney Schulz led the Rockets with 40 kills and she added nine blocks.
Tara Matter and Nicki Bruss each had 24 kills, Kyle Esser led Spencer with 60 assists and Kyleigh Hebert had 50, Marcie Hebert had a team-high 12 blocks and Dani Johnson led in digs with 58. Bruss added 40 digs.
Hannah Schmitt led Stratford with 21 kills and Hilary Belter added 18 kills and 24 digs.
Sam Frombach and Rachel Ludwig topped the Tigers with six service aces each, and Amber Schneider had 73 assists.
Individual match scores for Stratford were not provided.
Spencer is off this week and opens Cloverbelt Conference action on Sept. 7 at home against Owen-Withee, while Stratford plays at the Greenwood Quadrangular on Tuesday and opens its Marawood Conference season Thursday at Pittsville.
