MENOMONIE – The Marshfield girls soccer team picked up a win on Saturday, shutting out Menomonie 4-0 in a nonconference match.
Mikayla Brueggen had eight saves, including one on a penalty kick, to earn the shutout win in goal for the Tigers.
Nina Hashimoto had two goals and assisted on another, by Hannah Halle, to help the Tigers open up a 3-0 lead in the first 26 minutes.
Kate Schilling added a goal in the second half, on another assist from Hashimoto. Nicole Simon and Halle each had assists on the first-half goals.
“We came out and played a nice game with Nina really stepping up her game getting two goals and two assists,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “Hanna Halle got her first goal and assist in her varsity career, and Kate Schilling added the last goal as all three forwards contributed. We know teams will double Nina and as others step up it’ll prove invaluable.”
Marshfield (3-7-3) will wrap up its regular-season and Wisconsin Valley Conference schedule this week with a home game against Wausau East at 4 p.m. Tuesday, and at Wausau West on Thursday. The WIAA playoffs open May 31.
“We are picking up the intensity and playing with more urgency, and the coaching staff feels this is the right time to keep improving as the playoffs are announced this week,” Lindner said.
