Marshfield qualifies for sectionals in 23 events after strong showing at WIAA Division 1 track regional

WAUSAU – Marshfield will be sending a strong contingent to the sectionals are competing at the WIAA Division 1 Track & Field Regional on Monday at Wausau East High School.

The Tigers will be sending 15 individuals in 18 events and five relay teams to the sectional after earning top-four finishes at the regional. The Division 1 sectional is Thursday at D.C. Everest. The top four finishers in each event qualifies for the sectional, with the top three at the sectional moving on to the 2018 WIAA State Track & Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse on June 1-2.

Adam Elhendy-Gunnarsson won the 200 meters in 22.66 seconds, was second in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 6 inches, and was part of two Marshfield boys relay teams to move on to sectionals.

Elhendy-Gunnarsson teamed with Caden Pierce, Logan Mechler and Sam Hinson to finish fourth in the 800 relay (1:33.02) and with Pearce, Joey Goettl, and Blaine Neinast to take third in the 400 relay (44.30).

The Marshfield boys qualified its other two relay teams as well. Pearce, Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann, Paul Fischer and Hinson finished third in the 1,600 relay (3:31.77), and Jordan Dzikowich, Addison Hill, Carter Chojnacki and Fischer were third in the 3,200 relay (8:26.49).

Schwanebeck-Ostermann also won the 400 meters in 52.60 seconds for the Tigers. Goettl took second in the triple jump (42-6½), Mechler was third in the 200 (23.75), Joseph McKee was fourth in the 3,200 (10.09.11), Hill finished fourth in the 800 (2:06.15), and Quinton Alexander took fourth in the shot put (46-10¼) to advance to sectionals as well for Marshfield.

On the girls side, the Tigers had two regional champions and seven other sectional qualifiers.

Meg Bryan won the triple jump with a jump of 36-4¼, and teamed with Gracie Holland, Kaydee Johnson and Carly Brickley to win the 400 relay in 51.84 seconds.

Johnson took third in the 200 (27.50), Holland was third in the triple jump (16-10½), Lidnsey Steffen tied for third in the high jump (4-8), Brickley was third in the 100 (13.24), Bryan took fourth in the long jump (16-7¾), Sophia Schrodi was fourth in the 3,200 (12:22.06), and Nadia Ougayour was fourth in the discus (111-11) to advance to sectionals for Marshfield.

Holland and Adam Maki also qualified in the pole vault, which was postponed until Tuesday due to wet conditions on Monday. Final results were not immediately available.
