EAU CLAIRE – The three remaining Marshfield boys tennis players alive in the WIAA postseason were eliminated at the Division 1 sectional on Wednesday at Eau Claire Memorial High School.
No. 1 singles player Evan Fait, and the No. 1 doubles team of Jared Cordova and Braedon Corteen were eliminated after losing their first matches at the sectional.
Fait lost to eventual runner-up Tyler Gosz of Hudson, 6-0, 6-0, while Cordova-Corteen was beat by Lucas Connolly and Mitch Olson of Chippewa Falls, 7-5, 6-2.
Marshfield’s No. 3 doubles team of Craig Paulman and Lucas Paulman (19-4) finished in third place, losing its first match to Hudson 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, before coming back to win the consolation match over La Crosse Central 6-2, 6-1.
Cordova, a sophomore, and Corteen, a senior, finish the season with a 15-5 record. Fait, a junior, ends up 11-9 this season.
Eau Claire Memorial won six of the seven flights and took the sectional team title to advance to the 2018 WIAA State Team Boys Tennis Tournament on June 8-9 in Madison.
The top four finishers in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and the sectional champion at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles advance to the 2018 WIAA Individual Boys Tennis Tournament in Madison on May 31-June 2.
