COCHRANE – The Spencer softball team scored three runs in the fourth inning and held on from there, knocking off No. 1 seed Cochrane-Fountain City 3-2 in a WIAA Division 4 regional final Thursday.

The fourth-seeded Rockets (15-5) move on to a sectional semifinal at Onalaska Luther (15-7) on Tuesday. The sectional final is May 31 at Markesan, where a berth in the state tournament will be on the line.

Kaylee Hopperdietzel had an RBI single and Chloe Drews drove in two runs in the fourth to put Spencer up 3-1.

The Pirates (14-2) scored one run in the fourth, but Tiffany Meinders shutdown CFC in the final three innings to preserve the win. She struck out seven and scattered 11 hits.

“We did a great job of taking advantage of the opportunities that we created for ourselves,” Spencer coach Laschel Canfield said. “Our seniors showed tremendous leadership today. They simply went to CFC refusing to lose. We faced a great hitting team today, and we kept composure after their big hits and kept them from scoring.”
