MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield High School athletic department announced that former standout player Taylor Varsho will take over as head coach of the varsity girls basketball team.
Varsho, a 2012 graduate of Marshfield High School, left the Tigers’ program as its all-time leading scorer at 1,370 points and holds 10 other school records, including most points in a season (483 in 2010-11) and most 3-pointers in a season (64 in 2009-10).
Varsho takes over for her former coach, Heidi Michaelis, who resigned following her 17th season at the helm. Michaelis leaves Marshfield with a 305-103 career record, eight Wisconsin Valley Conference championships, and four trips to the WIAA state tournament.
After graduating from Marshfield, Varsho, a three-time Wisconsin Valley Conference scoring champion, went on to play one season at Colorado State University before transferring to NCAA Division II University of Sioux Falls (S.D.), where she was a three-year starter and captain, and earned Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Year honors as she led the Cougars to their first-ever NCAA D-II Tournament appearance in 2015-16.
Varsho will teach in the Marshfield High School special education department after one year teaching at Eau Claire Memorial High School. She served as a varsity assistant for the Old Abes’ boys basketball team and was an assistant coach for the Altoona High School softball team, which finished with a 19-7 record this spring and a berth in the sectional semifinals before it lost to Prescott on Tuesday.
“Coach Varsho brings knowledge and desire to teach the game of basketball to the Tigers basketball program,” Marshfield athletic director Nathan DeLany said in a statement released by the school. “Taylor’s energy and passion to teach the fundamentals and work in collaboration with our youth programs, will help develop and mentor girls and young ladies into better players, students, and people.”
