WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield American Legion Junior Blue Devils opened its 2018 season with a doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday night at Witter Field.
Marshfield won 10-3 and 13-6.
In the opener, Logan Schreiner and Will Fetting combined on a three-hitter for the Blue Devils. Schreiner pitched five innings, striking out two and allowing all three runs. Fetting finished off the victory with two hitless innings.
Devyn Palmer went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Max Heller drove in two runs, and Ty Pankratz and Ky Swanson each had two hits for Marshfield.
Four Marshfield pitchers combined on another three-hitter in the second game, although seven walks and two errors led to a bigger offensive output for Rapids.
Only one of the Ramblers’ six runs was earned.
Marshfield led 4-2 after five innings before putting the game away with an eight-run sixth inning.
Palmer had a single, a double, three RBIs and scored three times, and Riley Bauman had two hits and an RBI for Marshfield. Carsten Jirschele and Mason Pavloski also contributed two RBIs each in the victory.
Marshfield will play another doubleheader Wednesday at Wausau starting at 5:30 p.m. before opening its home schedule with a doubleheader against Plover on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Jack Hackman Field.
