PULASKI – The Marshfield girls soccer team’s season came to an end with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to No. 1 seed Pulaski in a WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal Thursday at Pulaski High School.
The Tigers finish the year with a 5-9-4 record.
Pulaski (11-6-1) moves on to a Division 2 sectional final against River Falls (15-2-2), another No. 1 seed, at Griese Park in Marshfield at 4 p.m. Saturday. The winner advances to the 2018 WIAA State Girls Soccer Tournament in Milwaukee next week.
Pulaski’s Maggie Hernandez scored twice in the first 11 minutes to provide the Red Raiders with all they would need.
Marshfield’s Courtney Meyer cut the Tigers’ defecit in half with a goal, off an assist from Kate Schilling, 2:39 into the second half, but that was all they could muster.
“We played all game with a lot of heart and determination,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “I cannot say enough of how proud I am of the entire team and the improvement they made. From the Urbana tourney to now the improvement across the board of every player was the greatest accomplishment we saw from the team. No matter the role the players had either in the game or in practice everyone pushed the next player to greater levels.”
