WAUSAU – The Marshfield Post 54 Junior Legion baseball team is heading to the state tournament.
Ty Pankratz smacked an RBI double to score Peter Earll with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Marshfield downed Stevens Point 3-2 in the 17-U regional championship game Monday night at Athletic Park.
Marshfield (21-14) will take on Manitowoc (19-7) in a first-round matchup at the Wisconsin 17-U Junior State American Legion Baseball Tournament at 10 a.m. Friday at Memorial Park in Plover. The double-elimination tournament runs through Tuesday.
Kyler Bainer walked and scored on a single by Logan Homolka to give Marshfield a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Blue Devils extended their lead to 2-0 in the second when Earll singled and scored on a two-out double by Devyn Palmer.
Stevens Point rallied to tie the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings against Marshfield starter Isaac Meverden, who struck out six in seven innings and allowed just two hits.
Homolka earned the win with two shutout innings of relief, striking out two.
Pankratz finished with two of Marshfield’s six hits.
