PLOVER – The Marshfield Junior American Legion baseball team gave up two first-inning runs and couldn’t recover, dropping a 2-1 decision to Manitowoc in its opening game at the Wisconsin 17-U State Legion Baseball Tournament on Saturday at Memorial Field.
The start of the tournament was pushed back a day due to rain on Friday. The double-elimination tourney will now run through Tuesday.
Manitowoc reached Marshfield starter Mason Pavloski for two runs in the bottom of the first inning. That was all he, and relievers Alejandro Anaya and Ty Pankratz would allow, but the Blue Devils never got their offense going.
Marshfield was held to two hits in the loss and scored only once. Nick Urban walked with one out in the fifth and Logan Griesbach delivered a two-out single to plate the Blue Devils’ lone run.
Urban added the other hit, a single, to lead off the seventh. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Max Heller, Griesbach struck out and Adam Zee flew out to end the game.
Marshfield (21-15) will play in a loser’s bracket game at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
