WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield Post 54 American Legion baseball team gave up a pair of two-run innings early and that proved enough for Wausau as it went on to beat the Blue Devils 5-2 in a Class AAA regional opener Saturday afternoon at Witter Field.
The start of the double-elimination tournament was pushed back a day due to rain on Friday, and will now run through Tuesday.
Marshfield was held to two hits in the loss – singles by Ryan Krueger and Mason Coffren – and scored both of its runs in the sixth inning after falling behind 5-0.
Chandler Fochs hit a two-run home run in the second inning, and Grant Hill delivered a two-run single in the third to put the Bulldogs up 4-0. Sippel singled in the fifth to score Leischer to make it 5-0.
A pair of errors on a dropped third strike in the sixth allowed Devin Toburen and Coffren to score the Blue Devils’ two runs, but they went three-up, three-down in the seventh to end the game.
Marshfield (20-14) will play D.C. Everest at 1 p.m. Sunday hoping to extend its season.
