WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield Senior American Legion baseball team had its season end on Monday, losing to Wisconsin Rapids 8-2 in an elimination game on Monday afternoon at the Class AAA regional at Witter Field.
Rapids scored three times in the first inning and after Marshfield closed to within 4-2, the Rangers put the game away with a four-run sixth.
Marshfield was held to just four hits by Rapids pitchers Donovan Brandl and Jack Wenzel, and struck out seven times.
Josh Zwicke had an RBI single and Jake Sullivan knocked in two runs with a single to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead in the first against Marshfield starter Mason Coffren.
Trailing 4-0, Marshfield cut the deficit in half with single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings.
Ben Gust had an RBI double to score Ryan Krueger in the fourth, and Preston Wagner singled and scored on a Krueger fielder’s choice ground ball in the fifth to make it 4-2.
That would all the Blue Devils (21-15) would get after stranding the bases loaded in the fifth and leaving three more on over the final two innings.
Wisconsin Rapids went on to defeat Wausau 12-2 on Monday night to advance to the championship game. Plover takes on Wausau at 4 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner playing Wisconsin Rapids at 7 p.m. for a berth in the Wisconsin Class AAA State American Legion Baseball Tournament, which begins Friday at Marinette.
