PITTSVILLE – The Auburndale football team suffered a heart-breaking loss in its 2018 season-opener, falling 37-36 in double overtime to Pittsville on Friday night in a nonconference game at Pittsville High School.
The Apaches led 24-3 after three quarters before Pittsville rallied with three fourth-quarter touchdowns.
The final score in regulation for the Panthers came on a 53-yard pass from Sam Hardinger to Chris Snook with just 54 seconds to go.
After both teams scored and missed extra points in the first overtime, Pittsville won it on a 16-yard run by Hardinger and an extra point kick by Drew Bratlie.
Auburndale scored as well in the second OT, on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Cooper Weinfurter to Fletcher Raab, but the Apaches missed another extra point.
Weinfurter threw for 233 yards and three touchdowns, two to Dylan Paun, who had four catches for 111 yards for Auburndale. Trayton Weister caught five passes for 92 yards, rushing for 31 yards, and had one of Auburndale’s three defensive interceptions. Weinfurter and Paun also had picks for the Apaches’ defense.
Hardinger threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 49 yards for the Panthers.
Auburndale plays a nonconference game at Manawa on Aug. 24.
