PITTSVILLE – The Auburndale girls cross country team had five top-eight finishes and roll to the team title at the Pittsville Invitational on Thursday at Pittsville High School.
Auburndale earned the third through sixth spots, and had its fifth runner take eighth as the Apaches finished with 26 points. Marathon was a distant second with 45 points, with Spencer taking fourth (119), Stratford fifth (141), and Marshfield Columbus Catholic sixth (156) out of the nine teams competing.
Wisconsin Rapids Assumption won the boys team title with 33 points, Marathon was second with 47, Stratford finished fourth with 100 points, Columbus Catholic took fifth with 128 points, and Auburndale and Spencer had incomplete teams.
McKenna Zieher led the Auburndale girls, finished third in a time of 23:26.8. Teammates Macie Schmeiser (23:29.8), Vanessa Mitchell (AUB) 23:31.1, and Isabella Jewell (23:33.1) followed in fourth through sixth place. Erricka Zenner rounded out Auburndale’s top five, taking eighth in 23:42.9.
Uta Givens of Marathon was the meet champion, winning in 22:53.6.
Emily Wehrman finished 13th to lead Spencer (24:47.9), with teammate Kaylee Wehrman taking 18th in 25:37.4.
Sarah Zuelke was 34th in 27:41.3 and Lydia Golbach took 35th in 27:42.0 to lead the Stratford girls.
Columbus Catholic was led by Melanie Lang, who took 39th in 28:16.8.
Garrett Dolan of Assumption won the boys individual title, finishing in 17:33.7.
Auburndale’s Carl Lundgren led area runners, taking eighth in 19:46.9.
James Heeg led Stratford with an 11th-place finish (20:00.1); Bryce Fuerlinger was Columbus Catholic’s top finisher, taking 19th in 20:45.4; and Spencer’s top finish came from Ashton Ackman, who was 28th in 22:19.1.
