SPENCER – It took some time, but the Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team was finally able to secure its second win of the season.

The Rockets led 12-0 over Osseo-Fairchild on Friday night before a thunderstorm rolled through the area at the end of the first quarter and the game was postponed. When play resumed on Saturday morning, Spencer/Columbus pushed its lead to 28-0 by halftime and held on from there, posting a 40-20 victory at Ted Fritsch Field at Spencer High School.

Spencer/Columbus is now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Cloverbelt Conference, while Osseo-Fairchild drops to 0-2 overall and in conference play.

Austin Bacon had touchdown runs of 5 and 17 yards in the first quarter on Friday, and Carson Hildebrandt picked up the rushing torch in the second quarter when the game resumed on Saturday, posting touchdown runs of 6 and 1 yards to give the Rockets a 28-0 halftime lead.

Bacon and Hayden Bauman had touchdown runs in the second half for the Rockets, coming in between long touchdown runs from Osseo-Fairchild running back Caden Boettcher of 61 and 73 yards. He finished with 171 yards rushing for the Thunder.

“Defensively we were very solid, but we gave up a few big plays,” Spencer/Columbus coach Jason Gorst said. “We need to continue to work to improve. I thought Eden Jacobson really stood out with some clutch plays at linebacker.

“Our return game was clicking pretty good, which set us up with some short fields. Austin (Bacon) and Hayden (Bauman) have some real great open-field moves.”

Hildebrandt led the SC rushing attack with 105 yards, with Bauman adding 74 and Bacon 72.

Spencer/Columbus will hit the road for the first time this season, going to Fall Creek for a Cloverbelt Conference game on Thursday at 7 p.m.
