Columbus Catholic soccer splits two, finishes third at CWC Invitational

WAUPUN – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic soccer team split a pair of games at the Central Wisconsin Christian Invitational on Saturday to finish third in the two-day tournament.

The Dons lost to Waupun 5-0 before beating Central Wisconsin Christian 3-1 in the third-place match. Columbus won its opening game of the season on Friday during the first day of the tournament against Kenosha Christian Life.

Kellen Heinzen recorded 10 saves in the loss to Waupun as the Dons’ offense could not mount a scoring attack. Waupun outshot Columbus 31-7.

Zach Olson, Dylan Porter and Nadim Torbey scored goals for Columbus in the victory over CWC, with the final goal of the game coming on a CWC own goal. Torbey assisted on Olson’s goal, and Olson had an assist on Torbey’s score.

Heinzen only had to make three saves as the Dons outshot CWC 22-6 overall.

The Dons (2-1) will open their Central Wisconsin Conference season Monday at home against Northland Lutheran. The game begins at 5 p.m. at Griese Park.
