MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys soccer team pulled out a 2-2 tie with Stevens Point in the Wisconsin Valley Conference opener for both teams Thursday at Griese Park.
After Stevens Point scored at the 4:03 mark, Marshfield rallied with goals from Bennett Koehn and KyleTremelling to take a 2-1 lead.
Stevens Point’s Ricky Perez scored on a penalty kick with just less than 9 minutes to go before halftime to even the score.
Neither team scored in the second half.
“This game was an early-season test for us against a strong Stevens Point squad,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “We played a good first half with some good ball control at times. We were able to attack via our wings and speed outside. Our midfield
played tough, Point is very strong through the middle.
In the second half, SPASH had us on our heels and we played with good effort to preserve a tie. Alex Giles playing left fullback for us had a fabulous game, helping us on our attack and shutting down their attack on the right side.”
Marshfield goalkeeper Tommy Olson had two saves in goal for the Tigers, who held Stevens Point (1-1-1 overall) to just four shots on goal.
Marshfield (1-1-1 overall) returns to action Tuesday at Wisconsin Rapids. The game will begin at 7 p.m. at Washington Elementary School.
