AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale volleyball team took defending Marawood Conference South Division co-champion Wausau Newman Catholic to the brink, but fell a bit short at the end, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Cardinals in the conference opener for both teams on Tuesday at Auburndale High School.
Auburndale won the first two sets, 25-22, 28-26, before the Cardinals stormed back to take the final three sets, 25-12, 25-19, 18-16.
Izzy Hilber had eight kills, Marissa Ponshock added seven kills, and Mackenzie Raab had seven kills, 14 assists and 19 digs for Auburndale.
Maggie Willfahrt had a team-high 31 digs, and Teryn Lau chipped in six kills and 17 digs for the Apaches.
Auburndale will host its annual home invitational on Saturday, with Marshfield Columbus Catholic and Stratford among the participants.
