MERRILL – The Marshfield boys soccer team earned its first Wisconsin Valley Conference victory of the 2018 season, shutting out Merrill 2-0 on Thursday at Merrill High School.
Elijah Hubler-Marti scored off an assist from Spencer Frey at the 12:09 mark of the first half, and Frey added a goal in the 59th minute on an assist from Alex Giles to provide the Tigers with enough offense to pull off the road victory.
Marshfield is now 2-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, while Merrill falls to 2-3-1 and 0-3 in the WVC.
Tommy Olson had three saves and Austin Mannigel had one save in goal for the Tigers.
“Merrill played well, credit to them for playing tough in the midfield and having a well-organized defense,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “We played well, with some good scoring chances, and did capitalize on two nicely played goals, both played in from the wide side.”
Marshfield plays a nonconference game at Ashwaubenon on Saturday.
