SPENCER – The Spencer/Marshfield Columbus Catholic football team dropped to 0-2 on the young season, losing its Cloverbelt Conference opener to Osseo-Fairchild 27-7 on Friday at Spencer High School.
The Rockets, coming off a 29-0 nonconference loss to Edgar last week, couldn’t muster much more on offense in Week 2.
The Rockets were held to 160 total yards, nine first downs and just 3.2 yards per rushing play (33 for 104) as they fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Cloverbelt.
Osseo-Fairchild, which shutout Altoona 48-0 last week, improves to 2-0 overall and in the Cloverbelt.
Travis Pischel led the Spencer/Columbus offense, racking up 94 yards on 18 carries, but the Rockets were plagued by five turnovers, including three lost fumbles.
The Rockets held their own early, like they did against Edgar last week, before Alex Nysven scored on a 2-yard run with 1:55 to go in the first half.
A turnover led to another Osseo-Fairchild touchdown just 21 seconds later when Drew Johnson hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Meeks, and the Chieftains led 14-0 at halftime.
Osseo-Fairchild pushed the lead to 21-0 before Paul Selz tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Travis Pischel with 12 minutes to go, but the Rockets couldn’t muster another scoring drive.
Spencer/Columbus plays its first road game of the season next week at Fall Creek, while O-F is at home against Colby, which is also 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Cloverbelt after pounding Phillips in a nonconference game 40-0.
