Auburndale girls win title at Stratford Tiger Cross Country Invitational

STRATFORD – Auburndale had its top five runners all finish in no worse than seventh to literally run away with the girls team title at the 2018 Stratford Tiger Cross Country Invitational on Tuesday at Tiger Stadium.

Serena Moore of Prentice won the girls race in 20:43.8, but after that is was nearly all Auburndale.

McKenna Zieher was second (20:50.2), Isabella Jewell took third (21:02.2), Macie Schmeiser finished fourth (21:11.5), Vanessa Mitchell was sixth (21:21.3), and Erricka Zenner finished seventh (21:38.2) as the Apaches scored 22 points to easily win the team title.

Rhinelander was second with 71 points, Spencer finished fourth with 110 points, and Stratford took fifth with 126 points among the seven teams at the meet.

Jordyn Karl was ninth as well for Auburndale, which also had five others finish in the top 21.

Emily Wehrman led Spencer, taking 14th in 22:38.0, and Stratford’s Lydia Golbach finished 30th in 24:17.8 to top the Tigers’ runners.

Athens won the boys team title with 33 points on the strength of a first-place finish from Johnathon Nowacki (16:32.4) and a second-place finish from Nicholas Rogaczewski (16:36.4).

Stratford was second with 53 points, Spencer took sixth with 145, and Auburndale didn’t have a complete team with only four runners competing.

Carl Lundgren led Auburndale, taking sixth in 17:33.6; James Heeg led Stratford, taking seventh in 17:42.3, just ahead of teammate Cade Bruesewitz, who was eighth in 18:05.5; and Ashton Ackman finished 22nd in 20:17.8 to lead Spencer.

Auburndale, Stratford and Spencer will compete at the annual Smiley Invitational on Saturday at Tribute Golf Course in Wausau.
