Auburndale girls take team title, Columbus boys fifth at Edgar Cross Country Invitational

RIB MOUNTAIN – The Auburndale girls cross country team earned its third team title of the season, running to a first-place finish at the Edgar Invitational on Tuesday at Nine Mile Recreation Area.

The Apaches finished with 43 points, seven better than second-place Mosinee. Marshfield Columbus Catholic was ninth with 237 points.

Isabella Jewell led the Apaches, finishing fifth in 20:50.9, 1:21 behind winner Marissa Ellenbecker of Edgar.

McKenna Zieher finished eighth (20:53.9), Erricka Zenner was ninth (20:54.1), Macie Schmeiser took 10th (21:01.7), and Vanessa Mitchell was 11th (21:41.9) for the Apaches. Jordyn Karl (13th), Lily Kloos (17th) and Victoria Hasenohrl (18th) to give Auburndale eight top-20 finishes.

Holly Dean finished 43rd (25:49.7) and Lizzie Hanson took 49th (26:12.3) for Columbus Catholic’s top finishes.

On the boys side, Columbus Catholic finished fifth with 141 points. Auburndale had an incomplete team with only four runners.

Mosinee won the boys team title with 25 points on the strength of three of the top four finishers. Neillsville was a distant second with 67 points.

Carl Lundgren took 11th in 18:28.1 and Ian Lang finished 29th in 20:25.9 to lead Auburndale.

Bryce Fuerlinger had a top-10 finish for the Columbus boys, taking eighth in 18:24.8.

Columbus will compete at the Athens Invitational on Thursday, while Auburndale is off until it hosts its home invitational at Frey Field in Spencer on Oct. 2. Columbus will also compete at that event.
