Quick start pushes Wausau Newman Catholic past Auburndale girls basketball

AUBURNDALE – Wausau Newman Catholic ran out to an 18-point halftime lead and held on to beat Auburndale 53-42 in the Marawood Conference South Division girls basketball opener for both teams on Thursday night at Auburndale High School.

The Cardinals, playing their season opener, rolled out to a 37-19 lead by halftime and kept Auburndale at bay the rest of the way.

Natalie Aue had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Auburndale, which is 1-1 overall.

Auburndale made just 8 of 19 free throws and shot 34 percent (16 of 47) from the field in the loss.

Julia Seidel had 15 points and Jadelyn Ganski scored 14 points for the Cardinals as the two accounted for more than half of their points.

Auburndale plays at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption in another Marawood South game on Monday at 7:15 p.m.
