Athens holds off Auburndale girls basketball

AUBURNDALE – Athens made 9 of 10 free throws in the second half to hold off Auburndale 44-39 in a Marawood Conference girls basketball crossover on Thursday night at Auburndale High School.

The Bluejays (2-3, 1-2 Marawood North) led 18-12 after a low-scoring first half, and maintained their lead at the free throw line.

Kenadi Diedrich had 20 points, including 6 of 8 free throws, to lead the Bluejays. Paula Lira added 11, making 5 of 6 at the free throw line.

Natalie Aue had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Apaches, who have lost three in a row and drops to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the Marawood South.

Auburndale plays at Marathon on Tuesday.
