STEVENS POINT – Stevens Point had many more scoring opportunities than Marshfield and was able to capitalize on a few to beat the Tigers 2-0 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys soccer game Thursday night.

Hunter Peel and Stephen LaRose scored in a span of 6:30 in the second half to lift the Panthers to their fourth win in the conference and into a tie for the points lead in the standings. Stevens Point is 4-2, while Wausau West, Wisconsin Rapids and D.C. Everest are 4-1.

Marshfield managed only three shots on goal, but had a few chances to get on the board. Coach Ron Todryk said that even though the Tigers are 12 games into the season, a number of the young players on the team are still getting used to playing at the varsity level.

“We had a couple of opportunities,” Todryk said. “Colin Telin and Alex Kelnhofer had one-on-one opportunities. We just have to capitalize on those. We didn’t have as many chances on goal as Stevens Point. We are just panicking when we get in that situation. With a young team, sometimes you rush yourself.”

Marshfield hosts two of those first-place teams next week. The Tigers play Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday and Wausau West on Thursday at Griese Park.
