STRATFORD – A defensive battle between Stratford and Wisconsin Rapids Assumption came down to free throw shooting in the second half, and the Tigers were able to do just a bit more.
Stratford made 11 of 18 free throws in the second half to gain a little separation and held off Assumption 41-33 in a Marawood Conference South Division girls basketball game Tuesday night at Stratford High School.
Blaire Lindner was 5-for-10 from the line, and Breanna Ackley and Callie Lehman each made both of their free throw attempts in the second half for the Tigers, who outscored Assumption 25-16 in the half to erase a one-point halftime deficit.
Stratford improves to 9-3 overall and 8-1 in the Marawood South, holding on to a tie with Wausau Newman Catholic for first place in the standings. The two teams meet again Jan. 25 at Newman.
Assumption was held to just four made baskets in the second half and missed six of its 14 free throw attempts.
Lehman finished with 14 points, Lindner had 13, and Ackley had 10 rebounds for Stratford in the victory.
Maddie Bohn topped Assumption (9-4, 6-3 Marawood South) with nine points.
Stratford hosts Edgar, and Assumption is at Auburndale on Thursday.
