MARSHFIELD – Columbus Catholic used a stifling defensive performance to open up a big lead in the first half and cruised to a 53-18 win over Spencer in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division girls basketball game Friday night at Columbus Catholic High School.

The Dons pulled out to a 34-8 lead by halftime and held Spencer to just six made baskets the entire game, rolling to the 35-point win.

Eight different Columbus Catholic players scored in the victory, led by Addie Baierl’s 17 points. She made the game’s only 3-pointer and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line.

Maren Seefluth added eight points, and Annika Brown and Emmalee Jicinsky each had seven points for the Dons, who are now 8-6 overall and 5-5 in the Cloverbelt East.

Spencer falls to 3-10 and 2-8 in the Cloverbelt East, and returns to action with a nonconference game Monday at home against Athens.

Columbus Catholic is off until Thursday when it plays at Granton.
