Wausau Newman Catholic tops Stratford in battle of Marawood South girls basketball leaders

WAUSAU – Wausau Newman Catholic ran out to an 11-point lead by halftime and held off Stratford 59-47 in a battle of Marawood Conference South Division girls basketball leaders on Friday night at Newman Catholic High School.

The two teams entered the game tied for first place in the Marawood South. Newman managed a season series split with Stratford and is now 15-3 overall and 11-1 in the conference. Stratford falls to 11-5 and 10-2 in the Marawood South.

Newman led 33-22 at halftime and maintained its lead in the second half, outscoring the Tigers by one point.

Stratford shot only 35 percent from the field, making 15 of 43 shots, but did hit six 3-pointers to keep pace with the Cardinals, who made seven shots from long range.

Breanna Ackley had 17 points, including three 3-pointers, and Macie Schillinger added 15 points nad seven rebounds for Stratford.

Julia Seidel had 17 points for Newman Catholic.

Stratford plays a nonconference game at Wittenberg-Birnamwood on Tuesday before return to conference play Feb. 1 at home against Phillips.
