WAUSAU – The Marshfield girls basketball team has been surging in the second half of the season and on Friday night, the Tigers put together probably their best game of the season.

Marshfield shot 50 percent from the floor, made 22 of 27 free throws, and put up a season high in points as it took down Wausau West 71-67 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference matchup at West High School.

The Tigers improve to 9-11 overall and finish their WVC schedule with a 7-5 record and a guaranteed third-place finish. Marshfield also dealt West (15-4, 8-2 WVC) a big blow in its hopes of a conference title as the Warriors now fall two games behind first-place Stevens Point with two games remaining.

Marshfield, which lost by 29 points to West at home on Jan. 8, trailed 32-27 at halftime before putting up 44 points in the second half to pull out the victory.

Maddie Michaelis was 7-for-16 from 3-point range and scored a team-high 24 points for Marshfield. Jenna Jakobi added 23 points and six rebounds, making 13 of 17 shots from the free-throw line.

Kadie Deaton scored a game-high 30 points for West.

Marshfield, which has now won four of its last five games, will finish its regular-season schedule with nonconference home games Monday against Lakeland and next Friday, Feb. 15, against Menomonie.
