SPENCER – The Spencer/Marshfield Columbus Catholic football team was bitten by the turnover bug on Friday.
The Rockets committed six turnovers, including five interceptions, and dropped a Cloverbelt Conference game to Stanley-Boyd 20-10 at Spencer High School.
The offensive output was essentially even, with Stanley-Boyd outgaining Spencer/Columbus by just one yard, 244-243. However, it was the turnovers that made the difference. S/C quarterback Paul Selz was picked off five times and the Rockets lost a fumble in the defeat.
Jared Boyle’s 29-yard field goal gave the Rockets an early lead only to see the Orioles respond with a 2-yard touchdown run by Keith Smasal.
The score remained 7-3 in favor of S-B through the rest of the first half.
S/C regained the lead on an 11-yard touchdown run by Jacob Welsh in the third quarter, but the Rockets couldn’t score again against the opportunistic Orioles’ defense.
Neil Hebert had touchdown runs of 5 and 3 yards to push Stanley-Boyd to the win.
Spencer/Columbus drops to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Cloverbelt. It plays at undefeated Eau Claire Regis on Sept. 25 before hosting Cadott in the Columbus homecoming game Oct. 2 at Beell Stadium in Marshfield.
