WAUSAU – In the first huge cross country invitational of the season, members Marshfield, Stratford and Auburndale had some great individual performances Saturday at the Smiley Invitational at Legion Golf Course in Wausau.
Each team had a top-five individual finish in races that featured nearly 200 runners.
Marshfield’s Rebecca Voss continued her strong start to her career. The freshman finished third in the Division 1 girls race in 14:57.2, just six seconds off the pace. Fellow Wisconsin Valley Conference runners Ashley Eckhoff of Wausau East and Liz Berkholtz of Stevens Point battled to the finish, with Eckhoff winning in 14:51.1, just seven-tenths of a second ahead of Berkholtz.
Marshfield finished 14th as a team. Jennifer Kaiser had the second-best time for the Tigers, taking 45th in 16:36.1. River Falls edged Wausau East for the team title.
“Rebecca Voss continues to impress us with a phenominal race at this meet,” Marshfield coach Dan Akin said. “In a meet of this size, we just had too many gaps as a team. Alexis Dzikowich (18:04.6) continues to show outstanding improvement, as does newcomer Danielle Sopiarz (18:07.1).”
Auburndale also got a strong finish from its top girl runner, Danica Harrison. The Apaches junior finished third in the Division 2-3 race with a time of 15:34.5. Rachel Sudbury of Tomahawk won the meet going away, finishing in 15:08.1. Ana Breit of Stevens Point Pacelli was a distant second in 15:24.5.
Stratford’s Matt Zuelke continued on his strong start to the season. After winning three invitationals earlier this year, Zuelke took fourth in the Division 2-3 boys race in 17:09.1. Matthew Easker of Wittenberg-Birnamwood won the meet in 16:56.4, five seconds ahead of Matt Eidenschink of Nekoosa/Port Edwards (17:01.3). Nekoosa/Port Edwards won the team title.
Stevens Point won the Division 1 boys title behind a third-place finish from Michael Larson (16:41.1) and a fourth-place run from Jon Formella (16:44.2).
Marshfield took eighth, led by Bryan Zimmerman’s 20th-place finish in 17:10.8. Adam Voss was 24th in 17:20.4.
“We got a number of impressive races from Bryan Zimmerman, Adam Voss, Aaron Anderson and freshman Nolan Redetzke,” Akin said. “Adam Binder responded with a solid race as well. Like the girls, we had some gaps that were exposed today and we need to tighten up our pack.”
