MERRILL – The Marshfield girls soccer team earned its first Wisconsin Valley Conference victory of the season, shutting out Merrill 4-0 on Tuesday night at Merrill High School.
Nina Hashimoto scored twice and had an assist, Sophia Gruenling added a goal and an assist, and Ryenne Zee scored for the Tigers, who are now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the WVC.
“Playing a little short-handed at forward, Ryenne Zee got her first start and came through with strong play and many positive results,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “(Zee’s) goal was one of the prettier goals we have had in a few years.”
Hashimoto scored in the opening two minutes and Zee added a goal with the final two minutes of the half to put the Tigers up 2-0.
Hashimoto and Sophia Gruenling added goals in a five-minute span midway through the second half to provide the final margin.
Mikayla Brueggen saved all three shots she saw in goal for the Tigers.
Lindner said Ana Paape turned away a number of Merrill attacks, and the play of Cassidy Kolstad, Paige Gruenling, Aly Bakke, Ally Dietsche, and Jenna Asplin on the defensive end was a key in the shutout victory.
Marshfield hosts D.C. Everest on Thursday and has a nonconference game at Hortonville on Friday.
