MARSHFIELD – The long-awaited home opener for the Marshfield girls soccer team ended in a loss as Wisconsin Rapids rallied for a 2-1 win on Monday at Griese Park.
Nina Hashimoto scored on a penalty kick 2:23 into the game for the Tigers, but that would be their only goal as Wisconsin Rapids goalkeeper Hannah Felker saved the next seven shots she faced.
Chelsey King scored 3:26 into the second half to tie the game, and Itannah Jarosch scored in the 79th minute to what proved to be the game-winner for Wisconsin Rapids (4-2-1, 3-0 Wisconsin Valley Conference).
Mikayla Brueggen had 14 saves in goal for Marshfield (3-5, 1-3 WVC).
“Rapids came out the second half and took control with some better passing and scoring attempts than we could muster,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “Mikayla Brueggen and Nicole Simon had some strong plays or it could have been worse. Ana Paape thwarted many attacks as usual, but slippery footing made defense a little tricky for all as players were slipping regularly in the second half especially. Rapids did a nice job taking Nina out of the game essentially with two and three defenders as she touched the ball.”
Marshfield plays at Wausau East on Tuesday and Wausau West on Thursday.
