MARSHFIELD – After a number of narrow misses in recent years, the Marshfield softball team has finally beaten Stevens Point.

The Tigers scored four times in the fifth inning to erase a three-run deficit and topped Stevens Point 5-3 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Thursday at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.

Marshfield is now 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. Stevens Point falls to 8-2 and 5-2 in conference play.

Jenna Jakobi hit a three-run home run for the Tigers, who trailed 3-0 before pulling ahead with the big fifth inning.

Marshfield added another run in the sixth to finish off the victory. It is Marshfield’s first against Stevens Point since 1997.

Freshman Courtney Donahue settled down after giving up three runs in the first three innings, blanking the Panthers over their final four at-bats. She struck out 12 and walked three.

Taylor Barwick added an RBI for the Tigers.

A doubleheader Saturday against Holmen has been postponed, so Marshfield’s next game will be at home Tuesday against Wisconsin Rapids. Game time at the Marshfield Fairgrounds is 4:30 p.m.
