MARSHFIELD – Marshfield dropped just four games in its five matches in which it won and pulled out a 5-2 victory over Wisconsin Rapids in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys tennis dual meet Monday at the Boson Tennis Complex at Marshfield High School.
Calvin Lawler (No. 2 singles) and Ryan Paulman (No. 3 singles) won by identical 6-0, 6-1, scores for the Tigers. Marshfield’s No. 4 singles player, Eli Swansen, needed one more game to finish off his victory, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Marshfield also won the top two flights in doubles. The No. 1 team of Jared Cordova and Will Fay, and the No. 2 team of Lucas Paulman and Sam Roherty, both swept their matches, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Wisconsin Rapids’ two victories came at No. 1 singles from Harrison Sullivan and the No. 3 doubles team of Joey Bauman and Eric Huglen. Bauman-Huglen won the only competitive match of the dual, topping Josh Grissman and Justin Rachu of Marshfield, 6-4, 7-5.
Marshfield is now 3-0 in the WVC standings, while Rapids drops to 1-3.
The Tigers, winners of the past two WVC championships, host Wausau East on Thursday and finish up their WVC dual schedule Thursday at home against D.C. Everest. The Wisconsin Valley Conference Tournament is Saturday at Wausau East.
