MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys tennis team took a major step toward a third-straight Wisconsin Valley Conference championship with a 4-3 victory over Wausau East in a battle of conference unbeatens on Tuesday at Boson Tennis Complex.
Marshfield is now 4-0 in WVC duals this season, with its final one Thursday at home against D.C. Everest. East falls to 3-1 and finishes its conference schedule at Wausau West on Thursday. The two teams are tied with 38 points in the standings. Two points are awarded for each match won in the conference duals.
The Wisconsin Valley Conference Tournament will be held Saturday at Wausau East.
Marshfield swept the three doubles matches, taking two in three sets.
The Tigers’ No. 1 doubles team of Jared Cordova and Will Fay won 6-0, 6-1, while the No. 2 team of Lucas Paulman and Sam Roherty, and the No. 3 team of Kennan Chojnacki and Justin Rachu, needed three sets after losing the opening set.
Paulman-Roherty won 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Chojnacki-Rachu won 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Marshfield’s other win came at No. 3 singles as Ryan Paulman gutted out a 7-5, 7-5, win over Anders Asperes.
