WAUSAU – The Marshfield boys soccer team found itself down by two goals early in Tuesday’s Wisconsin Valley Conference game at Wausau East.
Instead of giving up and chalking up another WVC loss, the Tigers quickly turned things around.
Eli Oba and Alex Kelnhofer scored before halftime and Colin Telin tallied the game-winner in overtime to lift the Tigers to a 3-2 win. Marshfield snaps a four-game WVC losing streak and improves to 3-5 in conference play and 6-9-2 overall. East falls to 1-7 in the Valley.
Wausau East scored quickly with a pair of goals in the first 14 minutes. Jack McGinnity and Luke Statz took advantage of the Marshfield defense to take a 2-0 lead.
Marshfield rebounded in a hurry as Eli Oba took a pass from Austin Gilbert and scored 45 seconds after Statz’s goal to cut the Lumberjacks’ lead in half.
At the 20:48 mark, Alex Kelnhofer scored unassisted to tie the game.
“Our defense wasn’t exactly staying home,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. “They were roaming a little too much around the outside. We made the adjustment on the defensive part and that helped us get on the scoreboard.
“It was good to see the kids not give up when falling behind 2-0.”
After a scoreless second half, Telin took a deflected cross pass and snuck a shot past East goalie Mark Priebe with just 38 seconds left in the first overtime to grab the win for Marshfield.
