RIB LAKE – The Auburndale football team needed a win against last-place Rib Lake/Prentice to stay alive in its quest for a WIAA playoff berth.
The Apaches got it, pulling off an 18-13 win over the Hawks on Friday to improve to 2-3 overall and in the Marawood Conference. Rib Lake/Prentice falls to 1-4, 0-4 in the Marawood.
A loss would have put Auburndale with four conference losses and in need of three straight wins to close the Marawood schedule. Now, Auburndale has a little wiggle room and needs to go 2-1 over its final three Marawood games to finish at .500 in conference play and qualify for the postseason.
Kyle Willfahrt ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with just 3:29 to go in the game.
Rib Lake/Prentice led 13-6 before C.J. Castellano scored for the Apaches on a 7-yard run with under 3 minutes to go before halftime. Auburndale missed the extra point, however, and trailed 13-12.
The score held until the fourth quarter when Auburndale mounted the winning scoring drive late in the game.
Auburndale hosts Chequamegon on Friday, Oct. 1.
