Columbus’ Eckelberg, Spencer’s Zastrow, Auburndale relay win titles at 2019 WIAA State Track & Field Championships

LA CROSSE – Marshfield Columbus Catholic sophomore Noah Eckelberg won gold medals in three wheelchair events at the 2019 WIAA State Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Eckelberg was one of a number of area athletes that picked up a total of 13 medals with top-six finishes on Saturday as the two-day meet concluded. Columbus, Spencer, Stratford, Marshfield and Auburndale combined for 17 medals in all at the state meet.

Eckelberg won the 400 meters in 1:04.58, the 800 meters in 2:13.94, and the 1,600 meters in 4:41.23 to move his state medal total to four for this year. He placed third in the wheelchair shot put on Friday. Eckelberg also won the 400 and 800 races at last year’s state meet.

Spencer junior Hannah Zastrow, who finished fifth in the pole vault on Friday, earned a gold medal in the Division 3 girls 100 meters, finishing in 14.98 seconds. She also competed in the high jump on Saturday, taking ninth with a jump of 5 feet.

Leah Zastrow took sixth in the 100 hurdles for the Rockets to also earn a medal. She finished in 15.64 seconds.

Also grabbing a state title was the Auburndale girls 3,200-meter relay team. Macie Schmeiser, Erricka Zenner, Jordyn Karl and Vanessa Mitchell won the Division 3 event in 9:51.18. Schmeiser and Zenner were part of the Apaches’ 3,200 team that finished second at state a year ago.

Paityn Hamus, Schmeiser, Isabelle Hilber and Isabella Jewell won another medal for the Apaches, taking third in the D-3 girls 1,600 relay, finishing in 4:07.79.

Senior Logan Zschernitz wrapped up his stellar athletic career at Spencer by earning his second silver medal of the meet. He finished second in the Division 3 boys discus with a throw of 172 feet, 11 inches, to finish second. He also took second in the D-3 shot put on Friday.

Mason Barth also earned a medal for the Spencer boys, taking fourth in the Division 3 110-meter hurdles (15.22) and he finished 11th in the pole vault (12-0) as well.

Marshfield grabbed three more medals on Saturday to go along with the fifth-place finish by Molly Meyers in the Division 1 girls shot put on Friday.

Senior Caden Pearce placed fourth in the Division 1 boys 400 meters in 49.33 seconds, and fifth in the 200 in 22.03 seconds. His 400 finish was just one-half second behind the winning pace set by Chase Roberts of Wauwatosa East.

Junior Gracie Holland earned a fifth-place medal in the D-1 girls pole vault with a vault of 11 feet for Marshfield to gain her first state track medal.

Addison Hill finished 24th in the Division 1 boys 800 meters in 2:20.64 for Marshfield.

Auburndale’s Isabella Jewell took ninth in the girls Division 3 400 meters in 1:01.27.

Stratford’s Teddy Redman finished ninth in the Division 2 boys 400 in 51.63 seconds.
