MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Post 54 American Legion baseball team got a solid pitching performance from Mason Coffren but couldn’t come up with enough offense, falling to Merrill 2-1 in its 2019 summer season opener on Friday night at Jack Hackman Field.
Coffren went six innings, allowing single runs in the first and fifth innings while scattering six hits and striking out four.
Piersen Pyan went 2-for-3 and knocked in both runs for Merrill.
Marshfield’s lone run against Merrill pitcher Jayden Sus came in the bottom of the fourth. Riley Boushack singled, stole second, and scored when Tragen Bogdonvich reached on an error.
Marshfield had one hit in each of the last three innings but couldn’t not plate another run.
Sus tossed a complete game, striking out five, and allowed six hits and one walk.
Boushack and Isaiah Baierl each had two hits for the Blue Devils.
Marshfield will play at the Manitowoc Triangular on Sunday. The Blue Devils will play Manitowoc at noon and De Pere at 2:30 p.m.
Monday’s scheduled home game against Antigo is postponed because Antigo’s high school team made the WIAA state tournament. Marshfield will play a league game at Stevens Point on June 12 and its next home game will be Thursday, June 13, at 7 p.m.
