DeFOREST – Colin Telin scored twice and Marshfield’s defense stymied DeForest in a 2-0 win Saturday at the DeForest Invitational.
The Tigers couldn’t keep up the pressure, however, losing the second game of the day to Onalaska 5-2 to finish 1-1 and move to 7-10-2 on the season.
In the opener, Telin scored on an unassisted goal at the 28:03 mark of the first half.
The Tigers put together a progression of five passes to score their second goal 12 minutes into the second half.
Defender Jimmy Young started the run down the field, passing to Austin Gilbert. Gilbert hit Alex Kelnhofer, who crossed a pass to Matt McCann at the top of the penalty box. McCann saw a streaking Telin and headed him the ball on the right. Telin finished to put Marshfield up 2-0.
“That series of five passes … they are starting to get what it takes to win,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. “It was one of those plays that was nice to see.”
A quicker Onalaska team took advantage of the Tigers in the second game, scoring five unassisted goals.
Ryan Berkhardt had a hat trick and Hunter McMahon had two goals for Onalaska, which had a whopping 16 shots on goal.
“They were a lot faster than us,” Todryk said. “When they score all five goals unassisted, they basically are outracing us to the ball. They showed their speed and we couldn’t keep up with them.”
Trailing 4-0, Marshfield scored consecutive goals in the second half. Alex Kelnhofer and Telin scored to cut the deficit in half, but the Tigers didn’t get any closer.
Tigers goalkeeper Erik Holm had four saves before suffering a leg contusion. He was replaced by freshman Matt Brown, who also had four saves before turning an ankle. Trenton Todryk finished up in goal for Marshfield and had three saves.
Marshfield hosts Merrill at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Griese Park.
