Stratford baseball player Chandler Schmidt has been voted as the WDLB-WOSQ Radio & MarshfieldAreaSports.com June High School Athlete of the Month.

Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Thorp.
Grimm earned 484 of the more than 1,400 votes cast during voting July 1-7.
Other nominees for the June award were: Marshfield girls soccer player Nina Hashimoto, Columbus Catholic track athlete Noah Eckelberg, Loyal track athlete Mason Malm, and Spencer track athlete Hannah Zastrow.
Schmidt, a junior pitcher and infielder, played a key role in the Tigers’ run to a WIAA Division 3 state title. Schmidt earned a save with a shutout seventh inning and added a double and scored a run in a 3-2 win over Iola-Scandinavia in the sectional semifinals at Crandon on June 4. In the sectional final the same day, he was the starting pitching, allowing three runs in five-plus innings and went 2-for-3 at the plate as the Tigers beat Neenah St. Mary Central 4-3 to earn a state tournament berth for the first time since 1989. At the state tournament, Schmidt earned another save with two innings of relief of Lance Heidmann and had two hits and scored a run as Stratford beat Boyceville 7-5 in the Division 3 semifinals in Appleton. He was the starting pitcher in the championship game against Markesan, throwing a complete game with six strikeouts. At the plate, Schmidt had three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs as the Tigers won 9-4 to claim their first-ever state baseball title.
