Holmen sweeps twinbill from Marshfield Senior Legion

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Post 54 Senior American Legion baseball team saw its losing streak reach six games as it was swept by Holmen in a non-league doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Jack Hackman Field.

Holmen won Game 1 7-3 in nine innings and completed the sweep with a 12-2 victory.

Marshfield is now 11-18 this season.

In the opener, Marshfield struck first with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Mason Coffren had a one-out double, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Devyn Palmer to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.

Holmen came back with three runs in the fifth and Marshfield had to play from behind.

The Blue Devils scored a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Eli Drexler and tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Jacob Earll led off with a double, Cole Hediger reached on an error while bunting, and after two outs, Isaiah Baierl singled to left to score courtesy runner Ben Gust with the tying run and sent the game to extra innings.

In the ninth, Brandon Flory had an RBI groundout and Adam Quam knocked in a run with a double to put Holmen up 5-3. Holmen added two more runs to go up by four.

Marshfield put two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t get any runs in.

Holmen jumped all over Marshfield in the second game, scoring in five of its seven at-bats, putting the game away with three runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh.

Kevin Koelbl was 3-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored, Ryland Wall was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and Quam had two hits and two RBIs as the Holmen 2-through-4 hitters knocked in 10 of the team’s 12 runs.

Isaiah Baierl had a single, a double, and a triple, and drove in a run for Marshfield, which committed six errors leading to five unearned runs.

Marshfield hosts Onalaska for another non-league doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday at Hackman Field.
