The Marshfield Post 54 Senior American Legion baseball snapped its six-game losing streak with a doubleheader sweep of Onalaska on Sunday, but couldn’t keep its winning ways going in its Wisconsin Valley Legion League finale on Monday against Wisconsin Rapids.
Marshfield took the doubleheader from Onalaska 12-2 and 8-6 on Sunday at Jack Hackman Field, then hit the road for its final league game of the season at Witter Field in Wisconsin Rapids and lost 8-0.
Marshfield (13-19, 5-9 WVLL) wraps up its regular-season schedule with a home game against Eau Claire at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hackman Field. The Blue Devils open Class AAA regional action Friday at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point against D.C. Everest at noon.
On Sunday, Marshfield was able to find its hitting stroke, knocking out 12 hits in the first game and 10 in the second.
In the opener, Will Voss threw a complete game, striking out seven in six innings as the game ended due to the 10-run rule. After giving up two runs in the first, Voss settled in and limited Onalaska to just four hits.
Riley Boushack, Eli Drexler, Ty Pankratz and Chandler Schmidt each had two hits, with Boushack scoring three times, and Drexler and Schmidt knocking in two runs each.
In Game 2, Onalaska struck in the first inning again, scoring three times to take the early lead.
Marshfield responded with a six-run third inning and added two more in the sixth. Onalaska (17-14) scored three times in the top of the seventh, ending Pankratz’s day on the mound one out shy of a complete game. Cole Hediger had a walk but struck out the final batter to earn the save.
Ben Gust went 3-for-3 with a double, Tragen Bogdonovich had a double and three RBIs, and Schmidt had a pair of hits and an RBI in the win for the Blue Devils.
On Monday, Wisconsin Rapids pitchers Donovan Brandl and Caleb Krommenakker combined on a three-hit shutout. Brandl struck out eight in four innings to earn the win, and Krommenakker had four strikeouts in three shutout innings to earn the save.
Marshfield was held to three singles in the loss, by Boushack, Mason Coffren and Devyn Palmer.
Krommenakker went 3-for-3 and Garrett Huber had two RBIs for the Rangers (21-6, 11-2 WVLL).
