MARSHFIELD – Marshfield’s run in the 17U Junior American Legion State Baseball Tournament came to an end one win shy of the championship game as the Blue Devils lost to Bay Port 14-4 on Monday night at Jack Hackman Field.
The Blue Devils survived their second-straight elimination game earlier in the day, beating Fond du Lac 12-7, but couldn’t make in three in a row and sees their season end with a 23-9 record.
Bay Port remains unbeaten in the state tournament and will take on Chippewa Falls in the championship game at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. If Chippewa Falls would win, the two teams would play again for the state title in the double-elimination tournament.
Bay Port scored four times in the bottom of the first inning to and went up 11-0 with five more runs in the third and two more in the fourth.
Marshfield plated all four of its runs in the top of the fifth.
Jaden Wilhelm scored on a wild pitch and Nick Urban smacked an RBI single to score Ky Swanson. Mason Pavloski added a two-run single to cut the deficit to 11-4.
Bay Port put an end to the game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning on five singles and a sacrifice fly, ending the game by the 10-run rule.
In the first game of the day on Monday morning, Marshfield fell behind 4-0 against Fond du Lac. After the Blue Devils scored twice in the third, Fond du Lac put up three more runs in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead.
From there, it was all Marshfield. The Blue Devils scored four times in the fourth inning, pulled ahead with a five-run fifth, and added another run in the sixth, taking advantage of six walks and two Fond du Lac errors.
Riley Bauman knocked in the two runs in the third for Marshfield.
In the fourth, Carsten Jirschele walked with the bases loaded, Urban was hit by a pitch to force in another run, and Bauman had a two-run single to cut Marshfield’s deficit to 7-6.
Fond du Lac committed both of its errors in the fifth as the Blue Devils scored five times. Parker Weik had an RBI single, a run scored on an error, Will Fetting had a sacrifice fly to plate Weik, and Bauman ripped a two-RBI double to put Marshfield on top 11-7.
Weik had a squeeze bunt for an RBI and the Blue Devils’ final run.
Bauman finished with two this and six RBIs, and Montalvo had three hits and scored twice for Marshfield.
Will Fetting earned the win with 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief.
