MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Chaparrals amateur baseball team checked off a few boxes on the positive side when they won a pair Dairyland League games this past weekend against Minocqua and Spirit.

Not only did the Chaparrals push their overall record back to two games over .500 at 10-8, they boosted their Dairyland League record to 9-3 with Sunday’s 12-0 win over Spirit at Marshfield’s Jack Hackamn Field in their last home game of the season.

The Chaps also got their hitting back on track and remained balanced on the mound, giving up just one earned run in the two games.

Sunday against Spirit, the Chaparrals got all the runs they would need in the second inning when Hunter Korger led off with a double. After two were out Al Lalicata hit a run-scoring single. Nate McDonald reached on an error before Shawn O’Connell singled to load the bases. Sam Schwanebeck unloaded them with a three-run double and Jason Kurth’s single scored Schwanebeck for a 5-0 lead.

The fourth was more of the same with McDonald leading off with a triple. Four consecutive singles by O’Connell, Schwanebeck, Kurth and Nick Anderson opened the floodgates before the first out. Bobby Pilz’s RBI single preceded a single by Jesse Kohler and when the inning ended, the Chaps were up 12-0, which ended up being the final.

Korger earned the win on the hill, allowing just one hit over four innings. He struck out six. Connor Jasurda pitched two innings in relief and Anderson the last one.

On Saturday in Minocqua, Schwanebeck turned back the clock and scaled the hill, throwing a complete game for the Chaparrals as they downed the Wood Ducks 11-1.

Schwanebeck scattered five hits while allowing just one run. He struck out eight and walked six.

Schwanebeck hit his second home run of the season and McDonald smacked his first in the Chaps’ 14-hit attack.

McDonald went 4-for-5 with that homer, a stolen base and two RBIs. Schwanebeck went 3-for-4 with his homer and three RBIs. Korger went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Pilz was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Kyle Westhuis hit the last of five Marshfield extra base hits when he went 1-for-3 with a double.

The Chaps will conclude their regular season on Friday when they’ll travel to Everest hoping to salvage a win in their three-game set this season with the Merchants. That game will be at 7:30 p.m. and then they’ll wait to see when and where their Dairyland League playoff game will be as they finished 9-3 in the league.
