Spencer rolls to first place at Abbotsford volleyball tournament

ABBOTSFORD – Courtney Schulz had 41 kills and nine service aces, and Dani Johnson had 74 digs to lead the Spencer volleyball team to a perfect record and a first-place finish Saturday at the Bud Nelson Invitational at Abbotsford High School.

The Rockets won all seven of its matches, losing only one game in the process.

Spencer defeated Loyal 25-15, 23-25, 15-4; Wisconsin Valley Lutheran 25-14, 25-16; Waupaca 25-18, 25-21; Phillips 25-19, 25-20; Abbotsford 25-12, 25-21; Colby 25-14, 25-19; and Stratford 25-17, 25-21 to win the tournament title.

Setters Kylie Esser (32 assists) and Kyleigh Hebert (31 assists) helped lead the charge for the Rockets, who also got 15 kills from Nicki Bruss and 12 kills from Amber Degonhadt.

“We played most of the day with a lot of confidence and that makes everything else click,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “Our setters (Esser and Hebert) did a great job running the offense. As a team, our passing and defense was solid.”

Spencer hosts Loyal in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division matchup Thursday at Spencer High School.
