MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys soccer team opened its 2019 campaign against Holmen, a state tournament qualifier from a year ago, and came away with a 2-2 tie at Griese Park on Tuesday.

Marshfield senior Kyle Tremelling scored seven minutes into the game and again just 1:27 before halftime, but each time Holmen’s Spencer Malone answered.

Malone scored at the 28:59 mark to tie the game at 1-1 and after Tremelling gave the Tigers the lead at halftime, Malone scored 5:04 into the second half to knot the score again.

Neither team scored in the final 40 minutes as both defenses dug in and allowed only a few shots on goal.

Marshfield goalkeeper Trevor Cassidy finished with six saves.

“I didn’t know what I had in the some of the guys,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “Ian Haugen coming off the bench playing some attacking mid, sometimes he seemed to settle us down because he made some really smart passes. I thought we did really well switching the ball side to side. We can really build on what we did tonight.”

Marshfield will host River Falls at 5 p.m. Thursday at Griese Park, before opening the new Heiting Community Stadium at Marshfield High School with a game Friday at 4:30 p.m. against New Richmond. The three tough nonconference tests lead into the Tigers’ Wisconsin Valley Conference opener against Stevens Point, the defending conference champion, at Heiting Stadium on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.

“They (Holmen) are a really good team, having gone to state last year and having a ton of juniors that are back as seniors this year, I’m really pleased with the result, to be honest,” McCann said. “This gets us ready for SPASH. Having this really tough schedule to start will get us working hard in practice, getting the intensity high.”
